The positive psychology approach to good life

Seligman (2002) postulates four different forms of the good life:

Level 1: A pleasant life

  • A life that successfully pursues the positive emotions about the present, past and future -- a hedonic approach

Level 2: An engaged life

  • Using one's signature strengths to obtain abundant gratification in the main realm of one's life (Seligmen, 2002)
  • Use your special character properties in important areas of life to experience gratification -- an engaged life

Level 3: The meaningful life

  • Using your signature strengths and virtues in the service of something much larger than you are

Level 4: The full life

  • This builds on all of the three previous forms of a good life
  • A life in which the individual used his or her capacities in an optimal way to serve something larger than himself or herself
