PhD Studentship - Manipulating pre-exercise nutrition to enhance postprandial metabolism and body composition

Applications are invited for a full-time University studentship to support and work in the Department for Health to work on a project primarily under the supervision of Dr Javier Gonzalez. Professor Dylan Thompson and Dr James Betts will also be on the supervisory team. This studentship is funded in part by the Rank Prize Funds. 


Background 

Studying postprandial metabolism and energy balance gives great insight into the future risk of developing cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and dementia, even in currently healthy populations. Given the global health burden of these diseases, interventions that improve postprandial metabolism are likely to remain a worldwide priority for the foreseeable future. 

Accumulating evidence suggests that manipulating pre-exercise nutrition can augment some of the metabolic health benefits of exercise and may also impact on energy balance. Therefore this project aims to understand how pre-exercise nutrition can be used to optimise adaptation to exercise in order to gain the greatest health benefits.

The Project 

This studentship will examine metabolism and energy balance in response to acute manipulation of pre-exercise nutrition. This will then transition into chronic studies investigating the effects of pre-exercise nutrition on body composition, energy balance interactions and postprandial metabolism. 

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to gain expertise in a number of biochemical and molecular techniques including enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, stable isotope methodology, and kinase activity assays. 

Working with colleagues of Dr Gonzalez, Professor Thompson and Dr Betts in the UK and Europe, there is scope to travel to other laboratories to learn new techniques and to build on collaborations. 


The Successful Candidate should: 

1. Fulfil the entrance requirements for a Department for Health MPhil/PhD (http://www.bath.ac.uk/study/pg/programmes/scho-for-heal-mphi/
2. Have a strong understanding of human metabolism (ideally with knowledge of exercise physiology) and associated research methods (recruitment of study participants, biochemical laboratory skills and statistical methodologies) 
3. Have excellent communication (oral and written) and teamwork skills 


Desirable criteria: 

1. Experience of collecting data for research studies examining postprandial metabolism and/or exercise in humans (oral glucose tolerance testing, food tolerance testing, cardiorespiratory fitness testing, body composition analysis, blood sample analysis) 
2. Ability to contribute towards the design of research studies 
3. Experience of conducting statistical analyses using software packages (SPSS; Statistical Package for the Social Sciences)

Funding Notes:

The successful candidate will be supported for three 3 years, and will include: 
o a £13,863 per-annum stipend based on 2014/15 rate 
o Full Home/EU tuition fees 
o an annual Training Support Grant
